Others

As well as the well-known names of the Somme and Ypres, there are many other battlefields of interest on what was known as the Western Front – the Great War battlefields of Belgium and France. British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought in a number of other less well-known battles and locations.

One of the most famous names for Canadians is Vimy Ridge. As well as the memorial and park with preserved trenches, there are also many interesting sites in the area around Vimy.  Another major battle was fought at Arras, in 1917. The French forces at Verdun fought intensely to hold the town during the early part of 1916, and Verdun has areas which have remained untouched since the war ended.

The most recent addition is a page covering Fromelles, a site with links to the Australians, and the most recent war cemetery created by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. A page was added earlier in 2020 covering the three villages of Cuinchy, Cambrin and Vermelles, where the poet Robert Graves was stationed for part of his war and wrote of in his autobiography, Goodbye To All That.
